What is Remuxing?
Unlike transcoding (which decodes and re-encodes the video, taking a lot of time and reducing quality), remuxing simply extracts the existing video and audio streams from one container (like MKV) and places them into another (like MP4). This takes a fraction of the time and ensures zero quality loss.
When should I use this?
- You downloaded an MKV file that your TV or video editor refuses to play.
- You have large MOV files from your camera that you want in an MP4 container.
- You want instant results without waiting for re-encoding.
Limitations
Not all codecs can be placed inside an MP4 file. For instance, if your MKV contains VP9 video, this fast process will fail or produce an unplayable file. In such cases, please use our Universal Video Converter to properly transcode the file.
